Grieving Parents Group

For those who have lost a child… of any age

World Wide Candle Lighting Service

The Grieving Parents Group is here to support you in your time of loss and grief

It’s hard to imagine what life is like for families who have lost a child of any age…unless you have lived through such a personal tragedy. For many such families, the ache of loss is always with them and finding ways to cope and carry on are difficult.

But there is a place in Northwest Arkansas where such families are finding help, hope and support. The Grieving Parents Group meets at Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas on the 2nd Monday of each month.

It is a safe environment where families who share the same difficult circumstances can come together and help each other walk through grief and life after the loss of a child of any age from any cause.

“We understand the challenges of going through life without a child that was supposed to be there,” says Susan Averitt.  She has been a member of the group for about two years.  Her loss occurred eight years ago. But for most families, the time since their loss isn’t important.

“It is a lifelong process,” says Averitt.  “Those of us who have walked through our grief for longer can help those for whom the pain is fresh.  So often people say things that are hurtful without meaning to.  No one can understand the ongoing struggle.  In this group, we try to forgive people who cannot understand what we are going through and help each other get through the emotions that a careless comment can bring.”

Group leaders hope to raise awareness so that more people can access this resource.  If you are interested in speaking to a member of the group, facilitator Steve Sheely is available for interviews as is Ms. Averitt.   For more information or to arrange an interview, please call (479) 521-2660.

The group meets on the 2nd Monday of each month.
The church’s address is 1400 Rolling Hills Drive in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
